I had the opportunity to visit the Philippines through the Teachers for Global Classrooms program through the United States Department of State and managed by IREX. The program consists of an 8 week on-line global classroom course and 3 day symposium in Washington, D.C. during the month of February. Teachers are then assigned to their respective countries. The duration of the visit ranges between two to three weeks. This web-site is not an official U.S. Department of State site. I visited Philippines from June 21st through July 8th. Initially, our group met in Manila where we toured public, private schools and the United States Embassy. Teachers later traveled to various regions of the Philippines . I was placed in Calamba, Laguna with my partner teacher, Amanda Wallace, who is from North Carolina. We did not anticipate the welcoming celebration filled with smiling faces and the excitement of our visit to Mary Help of Christians College. When we arrived, a large banner with our names, was hanging at entrance to the school. The students performed music, songs, dance, and poetry. Our entire time at the school was filled with fascinating people and experiences! I am delighted to share my wonderful experience in the Philippines and hope you also enjoy this beautiful culture! |
I am a secondary biology and global studies teacher at Middle College High School @ Santa Ana College . Our students attend high school and college concurrently. We are a small school with 14 teachers and approximately 350 students. We are located south of Los Angeles in Santa Ana, a city in Southern California. Demographically, our region is diverse and is home to many immigrants. We are close to the Pacific Ocean and have a Mediterranean climate.
California has numerous resources. It is a major beef and agricultural producer for the nation. Presently, we are experiencing a severe drought and everyone must conserve water. The effects of the drought are being felt everywhere. El Nino weather conditions are expected to bring rainy conditions in the winter months. However, several scientists have different views and are unable to predict the outcome. Additionally, the risk of fires is elevated due to the dry conditions during this time. Fact: California has the largest Filipino population in the United States
